Rivanna Trails

Events

Trail maintenance work parties occur the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00.

Our gathering point for work parties is at the RTF equipment shed at 2030 Morton Drive, near the Meadowcreek Gardens and behind Bodo's and the English Inn (see map). We usually meet at the tool shed at 8:45 and carpool to the work site, but contact the work party leader if you want to go directly to the project or plan on being late.

We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have groups participate in our work parties, but please contact us ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

Join us for our 16th annual hike around the City on the Rivanna Trail! Registration opens on September 23 for RTF members, and on October 7 for the general public.
    • Approximate distance: ~ 19 miles.
    • Approximate hiking time: approximately 8 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
    • We hike around the City in counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary. We will have some rock-hops across streams, so participants may want to bring a pair of water-safe shoes or sandals.
    • Start: Riverview Park is located at the eastern end of Chesapeake Street. We leave promptly at 6:30 AM.
    • What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs.
    • Important note: This is a strenuous hike. Be sure you build up your endurance and break in your boots before hike day.
    • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
    • We'll send out more details to registrants the week before the hike.

We invite you to join the Piedmont Environmental Council and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission as they begin a series of community conversations about ways for Charlottesville and Albemarle to develop a bicycle and pedestrian greenway system in the urban core that links together places where people live, work, shop, and play.

Speakers Chuck Flink, one of the nation’s leading designers of greenway systems, and Max Hepp-Buchanan, director of Bike Walk RVA, will discuss the community benefits of greenways and provide concrete examples of successful approaches.

This event will take place on Wednesday, November 8 from 6 PM - 8 PM at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. It is free and made possible by a grant from the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.
