Join us for a free guided hike around the City of Charlottesville along the Rivanna Trail foundation's main loop. September 23rd is National Public Lands day and to celebrate we are offering a full weekend of events. (Check the event overview for details of the other trail options and events.)

  • Distance: ~ 20 miles.
  • Run time: approximately 9 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and running speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
  • We hike around the City in counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary.
  • What to bring: There will be some aid stations set up along the way but make sure to bring water and proper hiking shoes, clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs. There are a number of rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants may want to bring a pair of walking sticks as well.
  • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located behind the Pie Chest & Lone Light Coffee (1518 E High St). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave from the RTF tent promptly at 8:30AM.
  • Finish: We'll end back at the RRC around 5pm, in time for the free Might Joshua concert that evening.
  • Important note: This is a strenuous run--20 miles over occasionally uneven terrain. We will have a number of volunteers in our group, and over the course of the run may fall into faster and slower groups, but assess your endurance and break in your shoes before the hike day.
  • By registering for this run, you:
  • Acknowledge having read the above description.
  • Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
  • Assume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
  • Attest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
  • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
  • We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the hike.

We have partnered with the Rivanna River Company and are renting them out for the day! After the run there will be local food, beer and cider starting at 12:00 noon and a free concert by Mighty Joshua starting at 5pm. Tell your friends and spread the word!
