Join us for a group bike ride around the City on the Rivanna Trail! September 25 is National Public Lands day, and in conjunction with the Rivanna River Company and Rivanna Roots concert series we're planning a series of events to celebrate the Rivanna Trail. Let us show you how to navigate the trail's main loop! (In addition to this bike circuit, co-sponsored by the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, we're also leading a full-loop hike, a family-friendly short walk, and a group run. Check the event overview for details of the other options.)

  • Distance: ~ 21 miles.
  • Cycling time: approximately 3.5-4 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and cycling speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
  • Start: Free Bridge is located at the corner of High Street and the 250 Bypass. Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave promptly at 1:00PM ("wheels down").
  • Finish: We'll end at Free Bridge, near the Rivanna River Company around 5:00PM, in time for the Rivanna Roots concert. And if you ride with us, we'll cover the admission charge for the first 20 participants who register! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
  • What to bring: a sturdy mountain bike, clothes and helmet appropriate for “urban wilderness” riding and the weather conditions, water and snacks, and any personal needs. There is a new bridge at Woolen Mills, but we still have some rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants can expect wet toes.
  • Important note: This is a strenuous ride--not technically difficult, but it's a long day. Be sure you build up your endurance.  This is a "no drop" ride so a guide will be with you at all times.
  • By registering for this ride, you:

    • Acknowledge having read the above ride description.
    • Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
    • ŸAssume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
    • ŸAttest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
  • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
  • We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the ride.
