Photo Albums

Here we post photographs of maintenance and building projects, RTF events, and life on the trails. We welcome your submission of your own trail photos! If you have any great shots of the Rivanna Trail, send them to us at rivannatrails@gmail.com.
  • 2018 Work Parties - much of the summer and fall was spent recovering from the record floods, but we got the Trail back in shape and better than ever.
  • 2017 Work Parties - we started the year with some new trail between Fontaine and Stribling.
  • 2nd Sat. Work Parties 2015 - In Jan. Nick led his troops in temperatures in the teens. High spirits and warm sun enabled volunteers to clear the RT between Jordan and Quarry Parks. Ending the year in Dec. Rip rallied his crew after their initial question of "We're going through that?"
  • 2nd Sat. Work Parties Oct. & Nov. 2014 and Loop de Ville 2014 - In October nearly 100 volunteers came out to rebuild the rock hop across Moore's Creek between Stribling Ave. and Sunset Ave. Ext'd. They also removed huge piles of trash, clipped half a mile of trail, and side-cut new approaches to the stream crossing. In November we attacked a challenging field of kudzu with the short-term goal of connecting two new segments of trail parallel to the John Warner Parkway and with the long-term goal of revegetating this mysterious open plot with new forest. Also in November, twenty-one enthusiastic hikers turned out before dawn to participate in the 13th annual Loop de Ville. As always, the Rivanna Trail was lovely and challenging. We loved it!
  • 2nd Sat. Work Party Feb. 2014 - The last few work parties were too rainy to bring out the camera, but the weather did not deter loyal volunteers. February's party attracted a new group of hardy souls: it snowed! A dozen terrific volunteers installed water drainage ditches on a much used portion of the Rivanna Trail near Old Ivy Road. During the morning, numerous runners, backpackers training for an AT hike, and mountain bikers came through, all extending their thanks. This section of trail to Barracks Road recently received Section 4(f) resource protection from the Federal Highway Administration because of its importance as a valuable public recreational resource. The RTF remains optimistic that the trail can be preserved if the Route 29 Western Bypass is built.
  • Loop de Ville 2013 - It was a gloriously warm and sunny day, the Rivanna Trail was spectacularly beautiful, and, as always, its rustic nature made this annual almost 20-mile-long hike a wonderful personal challenge for all participants. Trail adopters and other volunteers had cleared the trails, and the rock hops had held despite repeated stream forces. Among our 17 hikers was a 7 year old who not only beat his 18-year-old sister's record of how far he or she could hike in a day, but he also was by far the youngest person ever to complete a Loop de Ville hike with us. Thank you, everyone, who supports the RTF and the Rivanna Trail. For even more photos of the hike, visit participant Nick and MaryAnne Boyers' SmugMug album.
  • Phi Gamma Deltas Oct. 2013 braved the cold waters of Moore's Creek to reconstruct our rock hop! Look for this crossing between Stribling and Sunset Avenue ext'd. Thanks, men!
  • 2nd Sat. Work Party Sept. 2013 - Thank you, Whole Foods, for sponsoring a Kids Stewardship Event on the Trail the same day as our work party. Thank you, kids! You were great.
  • RT between Barracks Road and Leonard Sandridge Road Aug. 2013 - In 1998 UVA granted the RTF permission to build trails through the lovely riparian forest behind the JAG, Law, and Darden Business Schools. In 1999 more than 100 volunteers helped the RTF build trail and three "organic"-style bridges here on National Trails Day. Now this section of trail is heavily used by members of the entire Charlottesville-Albemarle community, and numerous volunteers have continued to donate their time keeping it open and accessible, including most recently Eagle Scout Ben Beiter. A big thank you to UVA and to all volunteers!
  • 2nd Sat. Work Party July 2013 - The RTF is helping the City create the vision of a linear green park with trails from the Norfolk Southern Railroad to Hydraulic Road .... and beyond!
  • Azalea Park Work Party Nov. 2012 - In coordination with the City's Parks Dept. we defined a clear path for the Rivanna Trail through the park. Look for a hillside trail through the oak-pine forest away from the road, and enjoy a trek alongside community gardens before hopping over the Moore's Creek stepping stones to the forests of Christian Aid.
  • Loop de Ville 2012 - The eleventh annual group hike of the entire 19-mile loop (November 2012)
  • 2nd Sat. Work Party April 2012 - We reopened a long-loved original trail segment along Meadow Creek, now accessed from the new Meadowcreek-John Warner Parkway.
  • O-Hill Work Party - Three dozen volunteers repaired low-lying wet spots and rerouted trail to higher ground, clearing a ton of trash in the process. Special treat: barbecued lunch (March 2012)
  • Young people on the trails - photos from the Teddy Bear hike, and trail building with the Boys & Girls Club and Alpha Phi Omega (January 2012)
  • New Stribling/Sunset Trail - building an entirely new segment of the Trail loop connecting Stribling Avenue to Sunset Avenue on November 12, 2011
  • Loop de Ville 2011 - photos from our tenth annual group hike of the entire 19-mile loop trail (November 2011)
  • Day of Caring 2011 - volunteers from the University of Virginia relocate a trail segment to clear the way for the Meadow Creek stream restoration project
